If you’re a retiree looking to get back into the workforce to increase your income or fill up your free time, these in-demand jobs may be your best bet.
Some seniors come to a realization when they hit retirement age: They don’t want to stop working. Whether you’ve already retired or have been thinking about it, you may be better off getting a new job to build up your bank account and stay busy. Can it be challenging to find employment as an older worker? Sure, but if you pick a field that’s in high demand, getting that job could be a lot easier than you thought.
With that out of the way, let’s look at some in-demand jobs (according to the Urban Institute) for seniors that are ideal if you’re just not ready to hang it up yet. Some of these may require college degrees, so be sure to do your research and find all of the prerequisites before applying.
Administrative Assistant
Part or full-time work as an administrative assistant or any of the following positions is a popular path for many seniors:
- Accounting clerk
- Bookkeeping
- Information clerk
- Office clerk
- Receptionist
- Secretary
Some of those roles can be accomplished from home, so if you’re looking to work without commuting to an office, look further here.
Child Care
It may not be the highest-paying job, but child care can be very rewarding and relaxing for seniors. If you have kids and grandkids, you probably have all the experience necessary to start a new career here.
Driver
Some retirees like to relive their youth driving school buses. If you’re looking for more autonomy, some social interaction, and a side income, you can get it by driving for a rideshare company like Uber.
Real Estate
If the thought of setting your own schedule is attractive, working as a real estate agent may be right up your alley. You can also find retiree work in real estate as a property manager or a community association manager.
Teaching
Would you like to make a difference in your community and pass along some of that senior wisdom you’ve acquired over the years? Teaching can be a great way to do so.
This profession is popular among men and women over 62, and many use it as motivation to start a second career near retirement. By 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects teaching to see up to eight percent growth, so the demand is there.
College Instructor
Teaching at a community college, university, or a professional school is a great way to earn a stable living as a senior. If you have decades of experience in a field and an advanced degree, this may be your perfect retirement job.
Nursing
You can help care for others as a personal care aide or a home health aide. And if you have a degree and a nursing license, you can stick around in your field as a well-paid registered nurse.
Sales
Whether it’s in an office or virtually, sales is one field where seniors are always welcome. Depending on the type of sales you’re looking to do, no experience may be necessary.
