Capital Assistance Program for Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities
Some seniors eventually get to the point where they can no longer safely drive. Once this happens, they’ll need to turn to public transportation for doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, and more.
Unfortunately, every area isn’t equipped with public transportation that’s easily accessible.
That’s where the Capital Assistance Program for Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities saves the day. It provides grants to nonprofit organizations that use the funding to provide transportation to seniors.
AARP Foundation Grants
The AARP offers many grants for seniors. The funds are given to charities and nonprofit organizations that use them to cover various needs.
The AARP Back to Work 50+ Program is one example. As you can tell by its name, the program helps people over 50 gain access to in-demand jobs.
Another is the AARP Tax Aide Program. For over half a century, this program has helped over 50 million low to moderate-income seniors with free tax preparation services. By guiding seniors on deductions, tax credits, and the like, they can ensure they have more income for monthly expenses.
Pell Grants
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be fresh out of high school to receive a federal college grant. In fact, one study found that nontraditional students like seniors are more likely to be eligible for Pell Grants than traditional ones.
A Pell Grant can make your dream of getting a college degree more affordable, and there’s no age limit to apply. Fill out your FAFSA form to see if you have financial need, and you could be good to go with money for college.
Of course, you may not need any education grants in the first place. Some colleges and universities offer free education for seniors in some capacity. You don’t need to have the goal of graduating, either, as you can simply sit in some classes to participate without having to worry about exams, textbooks, grades, etc.
Foundation Grants
The federal government isn’t the only entity that gives out senior grants, as states and nonprofits do as well. In the case of nonprofits, you can find grants for seniors like those offered by the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
Their senior grants are disbursed to assisted living homes, community centers, and nursing homes. The funds can be used to improve facilities or offer senior assistance.
USDA Repair Grants
If you’re a 62 or older senior, you may qualify for a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to repair your home.
Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs
The Extra Help program could give you up to $5,000 per year in assistance with paying for prescriptions. To qualify, you’ll need to meet specific income requirements and receive Medicare.
